Snow Brings Reigate to Standstill... Again! - 09/01/10
Following the heavy snow before Christmas, Reigate residents expected the town to be prepared for more snow this week. However, weather unseen in England for nearly thirty years brought the town to a standstill once again and caused havoc for anyone trying to leave their homes. All of the local schools in the town were closed on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, leaving parents unable to even attempt to reach work. Untreated roads made driving hazardous and, as the cold snap continues, concerns for the elderly and ill are being addressed by care workers.
MP Resigns After 18 Years - 06/01/10
MP Peter Ainsworth has shocked friends and colleagues by resigning after 18 years. The former Shadow Cabinet Minister announced on Monday that he will stand down at the next election. Mr Ainsworth has been a popular MP for the East Surrey constituency, supporting local causes with passion and enthusiasm.
Local Men Face Extradition - 06/12/09
Six local men face extradition to Crete if found guilty of a vicious attack on another young Briton whilst on holiday in Crete. Curtis Taylor, Sean Branton, and Daniel Bell all from Horley, alongside Joseph Bruckland from Hookwood, George Hollands from Reigate and Benjamin Herdman from Crawley are all accused of savagely beating Robbie Hughes in Malia last year. Mr Hughes' injuries were so severe that he underwent four separate operations on his brain and has lost his memory since his teenage years. The six defendants refused to return to Crete to answer questions and European arrest warrants were issued.
New Street Lamps Throughout County - 02/12/09
Surrey County Council have signed a £250million deal to replace every street lamp across the county. The 25 year contract will see all 89,000 street lights replaced within five years resulting in massive savings of an estimated £12million to taxpayers through energy saving elements of the new lights.
Plans to Axe Bus Services Met With Outrage - 02/12/09
Surrey County Council's plans to axe several local bus routes due to poor usage has been met with outrage by regular users and a campaign to prevent the closures has begun, backed by local newspaper the Surrey Mirror with their Save The 324 campaign, named after one of the services under threat. The council's public consultation ends on 31st January 2010 when the fate of many services will be decided.
Internet Date Kidnapped - 22/10/09
A man was jailed for two years on Wednesday for kidnapping a Redhill woman he had met on the internet. Matthew Aldrich, 28, was upset after the woman had called time on their relationship after just a few meetings. He burst into her flat on July 27 and tied her to her bed with cable ties. The woman escaped the ordeal four hours later after convincing her captor to release one of her hands so that she could have a drink.
Local Club Debt Crisis - 15/10/09
Reigate's only nightclub, JJ Whispers, is in crisis talks with creditors having failed to pay more than £24000 in business rates. The exclusive club and the restaurant above, owned by the same company, owes a total of £29778. Council bosses will decide this week whether to pursue the company for the debts or to wipe the slate clean as an unclaimable loss.
Redhill Bank Robbery - 09/09/09
Daring robbers got away with hundreds of pounds after they robbed a security guard in broad daylight. The robbery took place at Loyds TSB in Redhill town centre at 10.48am on Tuesday when two unmasked men lay in wait for a G4S security van. The robbers escaped down the alleyway next to Kandootoo where a third accomplice waited in a silver BMW to complete their escape north on the A23. Both robbers were white and in their twenties.
Tesco in Merstham? - 12/08/09
Merstham could soon be the proud recipient of a brand new Tesco supermarket after the supermarket chain expressed an interest in the village. A prime location for the store would be at the site of the closed Iron Horse pub in Bletchingley Road.
Rugby Stars Honour Local Hero - 08/08/09
Rugby legends including Martin Johnson, Will Carling Sean Fitzpatrick and Zinzan Brooke joined 400 guests at Twickenham on July 17 for a fundraiser in aid of tragic local rugby star James Skeens who died of cancer in January. More than £32000 was raised at the event for the Oliver Morgan Skeens Trust set up to provide a future for James' one year old son.
Pensioner Conned Out of Savings - 22/07/09
Heartless conmen stole £1500 from a pensioner after conning their way into hisSouth Earlswood home and claiming that they would install a humnidifier in his home. The two men brazenly knocked on the pensioners door and them drove him to the bank to withdraw the money. The two suspects were white and thought to be in their early 30's.
Swine Flu Hits Surrey Schools - 09/07/09
Six schools in the borough have issued alerts that they may have been exposed to swine flu. Both the Warwick school and St Bedes in Redhillhave confirmed that they have either had actual cases or that relatives of pupils or staff had been diagnosed with the virus.
Petrol Leak Closes Service Station -05/07/09
The trouble-ridden Esso petrol station on Reigate Hill has been closed for over a week now following a fuel leak. Approximately 33 gallons of fuel leaked from one of the fuel tanks, causing the garage to close whilst investigators analyuse the extent of the leak. In March, several motorists were left stranded when water contaminated one of the tanks at the station.
Roadworks Misery for Reigate - 6/06/09
Motorists in Reigate are furious after the council allowed three major routes into the town to be dug up simultaneously, causing massive congestion especially during rush hour. The three roadworks are sited at Reigate Hill, Blackborough Road and Reigate Road.
Imposter Taxi Driver Sexually Assaults Teenager - 4/06/09
A teenager was sexually assaulted by a man posing as a taxi driver after he tricked her into his car. The girl had ordered a taxi from Reigate-based Belfry cars to pick her up from an address in Woodhatch at 2.30am last Friday night. An unmarked blue car pulled up outside and the driver identified himself as a taxi driver. The girl sat in the front seat and was then driven to a quiet residential road where she was attacked before managing to open the car door and flee. Police are warning taxi users to be extra vigilante whilst they investigate.
Drugs Found at School - 20/05/09
Two 14 year old school boys were arrested last week under suspicion of bringing Class B drugs to their school. The pupils at St Bede's school were found with a substance thought to be cannabis by one of their teachers. Both boys were bailed pending further investigation.
Schoolboy Airlifted to Hospital -03/05/09
A 12 year old pupil of the Warwick school in Redhill was airlifted to hospital after being hit by a car last Wednesday. The boy was struck by a silver Ford Focus as he walked home from school and friends immediately dialled for an ambulance. A Sussex air ambulance landed in Memorial Park and paramedics trated the youngster in the road before airlifting him to Royal London hospital with serious head injuries.
Reigate Estate Agent Dies on Holiday -02/04/09
An estate agent for White and Sons in Reigate High Street has died while on holiday in Africa. 30 year old Lloyd Dansie, who was a popular character around the pubs and bars of Reigate, died in his hotel room last weekend. The cause of death is not yet known.
Morrisons Clamp Down on Illegal Parking - 30/03/09
Morrisons supermarket in Reigate are installing number plate recognition cameras in an attempt to crack down on motorists using their car park without shopping at the store or for staying longer than the permitted two hours. The new cameras will record time of entry and exit to the car park and automatically issue fines when appropriate.
More Power Cut Misery for Reigate Businesses - 23/03/09
A power cut that lasted nearly three hours threw Reigate into chaos on Saturday, costing shops and restaurants thousands of pounds in lost revenue. Shops were forced to close and restaurants could not serve as they lost all power on the warmest weekend of the year so far. Rugby fans hoping to watch the final games of the Six Nations championship were also left frustrated and in the dark. This is yet another incident in a long line of power faults over the last year that has cost local businesses money.
Last Members of Drug Cartel Sentenced - 09/03/09
The final members of the drug cartel exposed by police were sentenced at Guildford Crown Court on Friday. Members of the gang lived in Redhill, Horley, Merstham and Woodhatch and earned more than £20,000 per week dealing class A drugs in the area. The gang were caught following Surrey's biggest ever police operation, codenamed Operation Kingbird last May. The members sentenced to serve time in prison included Kenneth Abrams from Horley, Paul Smith from Redhill, Tara Pickers Gill from Horley, Oliver and Patricia Ripley-Duggan from Woodhatch, Jarren White of Horley, Samantha Newbury from Redhill, Daniel Walk from Redhill, and Grant Smith from Horley.
If Only Cars Ran On Water - 06/03/09
Several motorists were left stranded this week when they unkowingly filled their fuel tanks with water rather than diesel. Some of the pumps at the Esso Service Station on Reigate Hill became contaminated with water resulting in unlucky customers breaking down on a dangerous stretch of the A217 climbing Reiagte Hill.
Local Lad Dies in Skiing Tragedy – 23/2/09
A 21 year old man from Redhill was tragically killed whilst on a skiing trip with family in the French Alps. Patrick Evans died after hitting rocks whilst skiing down a slope and plummeting into an icy stream. He was airlifted to hospital in Grenoble but later died from his injuries.
Secret Wedding for Wes – 21/2/09
An unsuspecting groom found himself involved in his own dream wedding after his long-term girlfriend won a Radio Mercury competition. Wes Parker from Merstham was completely unaware that bride Carly had won the wedding until just hours before the ceremony and was delighted when all became clear. Wes, a talented rugby player for Reigate Rugby Club, and Carly have two young children.
Driver Loses Control – 12.2.09
A woman driving a Toyota 4x4 lost control of her vehicle and collided with two pedestrians before crashing into a shop front in Church Street on Monday. The driver, taking her son to school, passed out at the wheel and mounted the pavement on one side of the road, hitting one of the pedestrians before careering across the road, hitting the second pedestrian and finally coming to a halt when the vehicle hit the side of the Anglian Window centre.
Thugs Break in to School and Steal Fish – 10.2.09
Thieves smashed a classroom window and broke in to the Priory School last Wednesday night, stealing only a plastic pot and the class fish. Whilst the items stolen were not of a huge monetary value, police are taking the break in seriously and calling for information on the incident.
Reigate Property Firm go into Administration – 28.1.09
Oakdene Homes, based in Bell Street, have gone into administration, halting work on one of their developments in Frenches Road, Redhill. Administrators sited widespread problems in the UK property market following the economic downturn as the reason for the companies financial problems.
Surrey Rugby Mourn the Death of Local Coach – 26.1.09
James Skeens, a superb community rugby coach who dedicated his working life to help others enjoy the sport, died in hospital just days after marrying the love of his life, Jeanette. James died in the Royal Marsden hospital after a long battle with cancer of the spine. James was well known throughout Surrey schools and clubs where he patiently and expertly coached children of all ages. The couple married in his hospital room, witnessed by friends and family including their seven month old son Oliver. The ceremony was also attended by rugby legends Rob Andrew and Martin Johnson. James' funeral will be held on Friday 30th January where mourners have been asked to wear rugby shirts rather than suits.
Local Women Fear Sexual Prowler – 8.1.09
Local women around Redhill, Merstham and Reigate are being warned to be extra careful when walking in the dark following a series of attempted attacks. The latest two attacks occurred last Tuesday within three hours of each other in Redhill and Merstham. The first involved a young woman walking along Gatton Park Road who became aware of a man following her. When she ran towards Colesmead Road, the man gave chase before disappearing close to where a 19 year old girl was brutally raped last May. The second attack occurred in Merstham where a teenage girl was grabbed from behind but managed to struggle free and escape.
Snow Brings Joy to Kids... But Misery for Motorists - 5.1.09
On most people's first day back at school and work, nature taunted us all with an overnight snow storm that left Reigate under a blanket of snow on Monday morning. As the kids built snowmen and raced to Reigate Hill and Priory park with their sledges, motorists faced a far more dangerous proposition. Police were called to several incidents involving cars sliding on the treacherous ice and crashing into other mobile and parked vehicles.

Golf Club to Sell Land – 5.12.08
Redhill & Reigate Golf Club in Pendleton Road are hoping to sell part of their land to developers in a bid to rescue themselves financially. The club hope to sign the contract over the next few weeks which will free up enough capital to pay it’s rent arrears and existing debts. To avoid the situation re-occurring, the council have agreed to lower the club’s rent.
Parking Plans to Cause Chaos in Reigate – 20.11.08
Surrey County Council have ignored strong resistance from Reigate residents and will go ahead with plans to lay over 2000 metres of double yellow lines throughout Reigate. The plans will cause chaos for commuters, shoppers and parents dropping their children at school as Reigate is turned into a no parking or waiting zone. The plans were unveiled in June and despite being met with objections from hundreds of Reigate residents, the council have made only minor changes.
Local Builder Jailed for Attack on Pensioner - 18.11.08
A Woodhatch builder who attacked a pensioner in the street has been jailed for three-and-a-half years. Mark Evans attacked 71 year old Charlie Connor as he walked home on May 13 this year. The court were also told how earlier in the year Evans had attacked his 61 year old grand father and stolen money from him. On both occassions, the defendant was allegedly drunk. Evans was jailed for three and a half years.
Teenager Suspected of Rape - 17.11.08
A 19 year old Woodhatch man has been arrested on suspicion of raping a 50 year old woman in her own home on November 8. The teenager conned his way into the victim’s home after knocking at her door asking for a light for his cigarette. The man has been bailed until December 22 whilst police conduct further investigations.
Vandals Cause Damage at Golf Club - 22.10.08
A gang of yobs broke into Reigate Hill Golf Club and caused thousands of pounds of damage after they hot wired seven golf buggies and drove them around on the course on two separate occassionsa. One of the buggies was dumped into the lake and others were crashed and discarded. The vandals first broke in on Monday night and then again on Tuesday night. The damage to the course alone will cost over £10,000 to repair and each buggy is worth £5000. They also damaged two cars and the front door.

One of Reigate’s oldest and most popular pubs has closed without warning. The Skimmington Castle on Reigate Heath had it’s doors closed by auditors according to a local resident, leaving regulars and ramblers stunned… and thirsty.
Twins Tragedy - 18.9.08
Tragedy has struck a Reigate family holidaying in Canada when the body of 21 year old William Costaschuk was found hanged. The devastating news has been worsened by news that William’s body was found by his identical twin brother Michael, who went missing after the discovery and has still not been found. The former St Bedes students were inseparable and friends are not only devastated by the loss of William but are also fearful for the safety of Michael.
Car Arson Attack – 18.9.08
A Woodhatch couple have been left shocked and angry following a mindless arson attack on their brand new car. John Siddall and Therese McKeown of Felland Road, Woodhatch were woken by a noise at 3.30am on Tuesday and witnessed someone smash the driver’s window of their Ford Fiesta and throw something inside. The car then burst into the flames and the arsonist escaped.

Reigate Rugby Star Dies – 16.9.08
A 20 year old rugby player from Reigate has died suddenly from suspected Meningitis. Andrew Wylie who played for Reigate Rugby Club’s first team was admitted to hospital on Sunday night and was quickly placed on a life support machine. The machine was switched off on Monday after doctors could no nothing more. The ex-pupil of the Royal Alexandra & Albert School and more recently Reigate college, was a very popular young man who will be sadly missed but remembered fondly.
Discarded Barrel Causes Road Chaos - 11.9.08
Firefighters and police were called to the M25 roundabout at the top of Reigate Hill on Tuesday following reports of a spillage of an unknown substance from a barrel left at the side of the road. After chemical experts had checked the barrel, it was identified as a non-hazardous cleaning detergent.
Teenagers Robbed in Priory Park - 9.9.08
Four teenage boys were robbed at knifepoint whilst walking through Priory Park late at night on Saturday 30th August. The 17 year olds were stopped by two men who were part of a larger group and were asked for cigarettes. One of the men then produced a pocket knife and demanded that the lads empty their wallets.
Funds Needed to Repaint Tree - 13.8.08
A Reigate artist who painted the now famous red tree near Junction 8 of the M25 at the top of Reigate Hill, is looking for funding to paint the tree again. Christian Hayes and friend Jon Bauer first painted the tree four years ago, instantly turning it into a Reigate landmark. The pair plan to re-paint the tree during the summer but are undecided on the new colour.

Reigate's skys were lit up on Monday night by a fantastic thunderstorm at the end of a two-week long heatwave. The storm lasted for around forty minutes and created a real spectacle as fork and sheet lightning ripped through the night sky.

Around 1,000 Reigate residents, including the staff and pupils of Reigate Priory School, welcomed Prince Edward to the park on Tuesday as he officially declared the newly refurbished park and facilities open.
Fire at Priory Park Stables - 2.7.08
Arsonists are suspected of setting fire to the historic stables in Priory Park for the third time this year, just days before Prince Edward is due to visit the park to officially open it after the massive £2 million refurbishment. The blaze, which started in the middle of the afternoon on Tuesday 1st July, took two hours to put out.

The brand new Pavillion Cafe in Priory Park was officially opened on Thursday by the Mayor of Reigate & Banstead. The modern looking cafe has caused much discussion since design plans were revealed, but all who have seen it since building was completed agree that it is a beautiful asset in the £6.5 million revamp of the park.
Reigate Schoolboy Dies on Train Track - 9.6.08
Tristan Griffith, an 18 year old pupil at Reigate Grammar School has died after he stepped onto a live track at Redhill station in the early hours of Saturday morning. No further information is known about the tragedy, but tributes have already begun to flood in via a tribute page on Facebook.
Chaos in High Street - 8.6.08
Traffic in Reigate High Street was thrown into chaos on Friday when a coach broke down outside the Red Cross Pub at around 9am. Rather than wait for the coach to be removed motorists mounted the pavement, endangering pedestrians and other road users in order to get around the stranded vehicle.
Donation to Church Community Centre Fund - 21.5.08
Reigate Methodist Church have received a gift of £50,000 from the Peter Harrison Foundation towards the £1.2 million needed to build a proposed community centre for the church. Members of the fundraising committee hope that this generous donation will enable them to begin building work early next year.

The restored Victorian Gardens in Priory Park have now been officially opened as part of the council's multi-million pound renovation of the park.
Reigate Honour the Territorial Army - 11.5.08
Hundreds of people lined the streets of Reigate yesterday to watch soldiers from the Territorial Army march through the town to mark their 100th anniversary. Members of the cadets had been in town all morning promoting the event with leaflets and union jacks and collecting money for the Help for Heroes charity. The soldiers were not phased by the sweltering heat as they marched through town in the midday sun, many of them having served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Reigate Man Arrested Over Murder 20 Years Ago - 22.4.08
Garry Vian from Reigate was one of five men arrested in connection with a murder that happened more than 20 years ago. Daniel Morgan was found dead in the car park of the Golden Lion pub in Sydenham on 10th March 1987 having been repeatedly struck by an axe. It is suspected that Morgan was going to expose a drugs network that could have involved corrupt police officers. One of the five men arrested was Det. Sgt. Sid Fillery who investigated the murder at the time.

Reigate & Banstead Borough Council have refused an application from Costa Coffee to open one of the chain's coffee shops in Reigate. Reigate traders opposed the plans and petitioned the council on the grounds that the town already has a Starbucks and a Cafe Nero (plus other cafes and coffee shops) and the addition of another one would have a detrimental impact on the vitality and viability of the primary shopping area.
Widow of Reigate Man Can Stay - 18.4.08
Aranya Weller, the widow of Reigate man Andy Weller has been granted permission to legally live and work in England after eight weeks of battling to remain in the country. Aranye came to the UK with her daughter last December following Andy's sudden death from a suspected heart attack and his grieving family asked her to stay. The Surrey Mirror newspaper campaigned for the family and the battle was eventually won on Friday 11th April when permission was granted by the Home Office.
